Turtlehead prefers moist, rich soil. Though it can tolerate nearly full shade, it may need to be staked if grown in deep shade. Prune back the stems in early spring so that they don’t get too tall. It has no significant pest or disease issues.
The flowers of Chelone, which sit atop spikes that rise above the dark foliage, look similar to snapdragons and are named for their resemblance to turtles with their mouths open.

Turtlehead does well in shade and woodland gardens, particularly near water, as it tolerates poorly drained soil. It pairs nicely with small shrubs.
