14

1And it was in the days of Amraphel, king of Shinar, Arioch, king of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer, king of Elam, and Tidal, king of Goiim:* 2They made war with Bera, king of Sodom, and Birsha, king of Gomorrah, Shinab, king of Admah, and Shemeber, king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela. (That is Zoar). 3All these were allied at the Siddim Valley. (That is the Dead Sea.) 4Twelve years they served Chedorlaomer, and the thirteenth year they revolted, 5and in the fourteenth year Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him came, and they struck the Rephaim in Ashteroth Karnaim and the Zuzum in Ham and the Emim in Shaveh Kiriataim 6and the Horites in their mountain Seir to El Paran, which is by the wilderness. 7And they came back and came to En Mishpat (that is Kadesh) and struck the area of the Amalekites and also the Amorites who live in Hazazon Tamar. 8And the king of Sodom and the king of Gomorrah and the king of Admah and the king of Zeboiim and the king of Bela (that is Zoar) went out and aligned with them for war in the Siddim Valley, 9with Chedorlaomer, king of Elam, and Tidal, king of Goiim, and Amraphel, king of Shinar, and Arioch, king of Ellasar—-four kings with five. 10And Siddim Valley was pits, pits of bitumen, and the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, and they fell there; and those who were left fled to the mountain. 11And they took all the property of Sodom and Gomorrah and all their food, and they went. 12And they took Lot, Abram’s brother’s son, and his property when they went. And he had been living in Sodom. 13And an escapee came and told Abram the Hebrew, and he was tenting among the oaks of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol and brother of Aner; and they were covenant partners of Abram. 14And Abram heard that his brother had been taken prisoner, and he had his trained men, born in his house, unsheathe: three hundred eighteen. And he pursued as far as Dan. 15And he divided against them by night, he and his servants, and he struck them and pursued them as far as Hobah, which is at the left of Damascus. 16And he brought back all the property, and he also brought back Lot, his brother, and his property, and also the women and the people. 17And the king of Sodom came out to him after he came back from striking Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him at the Shaveh Valley. (That is the valley of the king.)

18And Melchizedek, king of Salem, had brought out bread and wine. And he was a priest of El the Highest. 19And he blessed him and said, “Blessed is Abram to El the Highest, creator of skies and earth. 20And blessed is El the Highest, who delivered your foes into your hand.” And he gave him a tithe from everything.

21And the king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give the persons to me, and take the property for you.”

22And Abram said to the king of Sodom, “I’ve lifted my hand to YHWH, El the Highest, creator of skies and earth, 23that, from a thread to a shoelace, I won’t take anything that is yours, so you won’t say, ‘I made Abram rich.’ 24Except only what the boys have eaten and the share of the people who went with me: Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre. They shall take their share.”
