27

IAnd Moses and Israel’s elders commanded the people, saying, “Observe all the commandment that I command you today. 2And it shall be, in the day that you’ll cross the Jordan to the land that YHWH, your God, is giving you, that you shall set up big stones and cover them with plaster. 3And you shall write on them all the words of this instruction when you cross so that you’ll come to the land that YHWH, your God, is giving you, a land flowing with milk and honey, as YHWH, your fathers’ God, spoke to you. 4And it shall be, when you cross the Jordan, that you shall set up these stones that I command you today in Mount Ebal and cover them with plaster. 5And you shall build an altar to YHWH, your God, there, an altar of stones. You shall not lift iron over them. 6You shall build the altar of YHWH, your God, of whole stones, and you shall offer burnt offerings on it to YHWH, your God. 7And you shall sacrifice peace offerings and eat there and rejoice in front of YHWH, your God. 8And you shall write on the stones all the words of this instruction very clearly.”

9And Moses and the Levite priests spoke to all Israel, saying, “Be silent, and listen, Israel: this day you have become a people to YHWH, your God. 10And you shall listen to the voice of YHWH, your God, and do His commandments and His laws that I command you today.”

11“And Moses commanded the people on that day, saying, 12“These shall stand to bless the people on Mount Gerizim when you cross the Jordan: Simeon and Levi and Judah and Issachar and Joseph and Benjamin. 13And these shall stand for the curse on Mount Ebal: Reuben, Gad, and Asher and Zebulun, Dan, and Naphtali. 14And the Levites shall answer, and they shall say in a loud voice to every man of Israel:

15‘Cursed be the man who will make a statue or molten thing, an offensive thing of YHWH, a stone engraver’s work, and set it up in secret.’

And all the people shall answer, and they shall say: ‘Amen.’

16‘Cursed be one who disrespects one’s father and his mother.’

And all the people shall say: ‘Amen.’

17‘Cursed be one who moves his neighbor’s landmark.’

And all the people shall say: ‘Amen.’

18‘Cursed be one who misleads a blind person on the way.’

And all the people shall say: ‘Amen.’

19‘Cursed be one who bends the judgment of an alien, an orphan, or a widow.’

And all the people shall say: ‘Amen.’

20‘Cursed be one who lies with his father’s wife, because he has exposed his father’s hem.’

And all the people shall say: ‘Amen.’

2I‘Cursed be one who lies with any animal.’

And all the people shall say: ‘Amen.’

22‘Cursed be one who lies with his sister—his father’s daughter or his mother’s daughter.’

And all the people shall say: ‘Amen.’

23‘Cursed be one who lies with his mother-in-law.’

And all the people shall say: ‘Amen.’

24‘Cursed be one who strikes his neighbor in secret.’

And all the people shall say: ‘Amen.’

25‘Cursed be one who takes a bribe to strike a person—innocent blood.’

And all the people shall say: ‘Amen.’

26‘Cursed be one who will not uphold the words of this instruction, to do them.’

And all the people shall say: ‘Amen.’
