9

1And YHWH said to Moses, “Come to Pharaoh and speak to him: ‘YHWH, God of the Hebrews, said this: Let my people go, so they may serve me. 2Because if you refuse to let go and you are still holding on to them, 3here, YHWH’s hand is on your livestock that are in the field, on the horses, on the asses, on the camels, on the oxen, and on the flock—a very heavy epidemic. 4And YHWH will distinguish between Israel’s livestock and Egypt’s livestock, and not a thing out of all that Israel has will die. 5And YHWH has set an appointed time, saying: Tomorrow YHWH will do this thing in the land.’”

6And YHWH did this thing on the next day, and all Egypt’s livestock died, and of all the livestock of the children of Israel not one died. 7And Pharaoh sent; and, here, not even one of Israel’s livestock had died. And Pharaoh’s heart was heavy, and he did not let the people go.

8And YHWH said to Moses and to Aaron, “Take handfuls of furnace ash, and let Moses fling it to the skies before Pharaoh’s eyes. 9And it will become a powder on all the land of Egypt, and it will become a boil breaking out in sores on the humans and on the animals in all the land of Egypt.” 10And they took the furnace ash and stood in front of Pharaoh, and Moses flung it to the skies, and it was a boil breaking out in sores in the humans and in the animals. “And the magicians were not able to stand in front of Moses on account of the boil, because the boil was in the magicians and in all Egypt.

12And YHWH strengthened Pharaoh’s heart, and he did not listen to them—as YHWH had spoken to Moses.

13And YHWH said to Moses, “Get up early in the morning and stand in front of Pharaoh, and you’ll say to him, ‘YHWH, God of the Hebrews, said this: Let my people go so they may serve me. 14Because this time I am sending all my plagues at your heart and at your servants and at your people, so that you’ll know that there is none like me in all the land. 15Because by now I could have put out my hand and struck you and your people with an epidemic, and you would have been obliterated from the land. l6And in fact I established you for this purpose, for the purpose of showing you my power—and in order to tell my name in all the earth. 17You are still elevating yourself against my people by not letting them go. 18Here, I’ll be showering at this time tomorrow a very heavy hail, that there hasn’t been one like it in Egypt from the day of its founding until now. 19And now send, protect your livestock and everything that you have in the field. Every human and animal that will be found in the field and will not be gathered to the house: the hail will come down on them, and they’ll die.’”

20Whoever feared YHWH’s word among Pharaoh’s servants had his servants and his livestock flee to the houses. 21And whoever did not pay heed to YHWH’s word left his servants and his livestock in the field.

22And YHWH said to Moses, “Reach out your hand at the skies, and let there be hail in all the land of Egypt: on human and on animal and on all vegetation of the field in the land of Egypt.” 23And Moses reached out his staff at the skies, and YHWH gave out thunders and hail, and lightning went to the ground. And YHWH showered hail on the land of Egypt. 24And it was hail with lightning flashing in the hail, very heavy, that there had not been anything like it in all the land of Egypt since the time it became a nation. 25And the hail struck in all the land of Egypt everything that was in the field, from human to animal, and the hail struck all the vegetation of the field and shattered every tree of the field. 26Only in the land of Goshen, where the children of Israel were, there was no hail.

27And Pharaoh sent and called Moses and Aaron and said to them, “I sinned this time. YHWH is the virtuous one, and I and my people are the wicked ones. 28Pray to YHWH, and enough of there being God’s thunders and hail, so I may let you go, and you won’t continue to stay.”

29And Moses said to him, “As I go out of the city I’ll spread my hands to YHWH, the thunders will stop, and the hail won’t be anymore, so that you’ll know that the earth is YHWH’s. 30And you and your servants: I know that you don’t yet fear in front of YHWH, God.”* 31And the flax and the barley were struck, because the barley was fresh and the flax was in bud. 32And the wheat and the spelt were not struck, because they were late crops.” 33And Moses went out from Pharaoh, from the city, and spread his hands to YHWH, and the thunders and the hail stopped, and a shower did not pour to the earth. 34And Pharaoh saw that the shower and the hail and the thunder stopped, and he continued to sin, and he made his heart heavy, he and his servants. 35And Pharaoh’s heart was strong, and he did not let the children of Israel go—as YHWH had spoken by Moses’ hand.
