Camping at Lane Cove

Rock Harbor Lodge provides the park’s only (non-camping) overnight accommodations. It is located on Rock Harbor, near the northeast tip of Isle Royale. The location is hard to beat, but the accommodations are basic and it’s fairly expensive. For the nightly rate ($229) a visitor could purchase a tent, sleeping bag, and mat to be used exploring the 36 backcountry campsites littered across the 45-mile long, 9-mile wide Isle Royale and a few smaller islands. Camping is free and sites are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. Visitation is relatively modest and sites are almost always available, but those closest to the docks are almost always the first to fill. A free permit is required for all overnight stays. Permits are obtained at a visitor center or aboard the Ranger III.
