This has to be the easiest, and one of the busiest, walks in the book on account of the direct views to the Eiger’s great Nordwand, to the Mönch and Jungfrau and, way beyond Grindelwald, to the Wetterhorn and Schreckhorn. It’s a gentle, easily-angled walk, suitable for young and elderly alike, and there is transportation available at both ends: gondola lift from Grindelwald, cablecar from Wengen, and train to both places from Kleine Scheidegg. In the early summer the path is flanked by a rich assortment of alpine plants, but please don’t be tempted to pick any.
No directions are required beyond simply saying head south on the broad, clearly marked path which takes you along the Grindelwald side of the ridge. It makes a steady curve to round a spur coming from the peaklet of Tschuggen (rising from the ridge), passes below the Lauberhorn (famous for the annual downhill ski race held there) and beside the Grindelwaldblick restaurant (accommodation, refreshments), before arriving at the cosmopolitan complex of hotels and railway station of Kleine Scheidegg – complete with brimming crowds, souvenir stands and alpenhorns. The peace of the mountains will not be found here, but Kleine Scheidegg is, nonetheless, one of those places that all who visit Grindelwald should make a pilgrimage to see.
