ROUTE 84
Adelboden (1353m) – Unter dem Berg (1400m) – Hinterberg – Engstligenalp (1955m)
Start Adelboden (1353m)
Distance 9km (one way)
Height gain 602m
Grade 2–3
Time 3½hrs
Location South of Adelboden

This walk is a variation of Route 83. While it misses the opportunity for a close view of the Engstligen Falls, the Hinterberg corrie is the haunt of marmot, chamois and ibex, and there may well be the chance to catch sight of one or more of these animals as you wander through.

The approach is the same as for Route 83, except that you follow the riverside path all the way to Unter dem Berg (accommodation, refreshments) in about 1–1½hrs from Adelboden. Almost opposite the cablecar station a path heads north in woodland, then veers right and climbs the wooded slope in zig-zags, emerging from the trees onto more open ground before swinging southeast round a spur on a very steep slope to enter the Hinterberg corrie. This is formed by the ridge running from the Mittaghorn to Vorder Lohner, then south to the Tschingellochtighorn. Crossing streams the trail now works round to the western end of the Artelengrat which forms the southern wall of the corrie, to be confronted by the great grassland bowl of Engstligenalp. An easy descent takes you into the pastureland near Berghotel Engstligenalp (accommodation, refreshments).

Either return to Unter dem Berg by cablecar, or follow the broad path beyond the Berghotel to find a signed path breaking to the right (northwest); this descends to Unter dem Berg in 1hr.
