Tucked away in a maze of roads south of the B5105 in Denbighshire lies a little gem of a climb. Hard to ride and even harder to find, Melin-y-Wig is just waiting to test the legs of weary cyclists who’ve strayed from the well-trodden path. Exiting the village across a small bridge, you head north-east, climbing past houses and into some trees. The twisting, rugged road climbs steeply, hard round to the right and then left, your wheels slipping and skidding as they struggle for traction. Easing very slightly as you exit the trees, the broken road winds its way up to a small group of farm buildings where you can have the briefest of rests before the grand finale. The road rears up, arcing around to the left into a really tough 25% corner – your stinging legs won’t like this, but you’re almost at the top. Bend round to the right to roll to the finish at the brow.
