Leave the A483 just east of the village of Garth and head due south on the B4519. Begin to climb once across the River Irfon. It’s a very gentle rise to begin with, up over a crossroads, and then it starts to increase in severity as you approach an acute right-hand bend. Around this corner, up through the woods and then across a cattle grid, the beauty of the climb reveals itself. On your left is a dramatic valley, on your right a steep bank, and under your wheels a wonderful road set on a solid 8% slope. The uniform gradient bends slightly left then right, rising above the grassy hollow below before beginning to twist and turn to the summit. The slope eases across the exposed grassland before bending left, right, and then left again for the final push to the top. Across a second cattle grid you pass on to a military firing range, so keep your head down until you reach the brow next to a large lay-by!
