BRECHFA FOREST

BRECHFA, CARMARTHEN

RATING: 5/10

This is a varied climb packed full of all sorts for you to contend with, and in the centre one amazing view over the valley. Leaving Brechfa, you climb gently past a scattering of houses and into agricultural land. Keeping right at a fork, you hit the first of a series of bends where the climbing is slightly tougher. A steep little ramp after this takes you to the most pronounced corner on the hill: a left-hand hairpin set in a small clearing. Now riding through thick forest, you could be on the lower slopes of a classic Alpine climb. The sky opens up as the road breaks left past an entrance to the forest and as you rise you’re treated to a spectacular view of the tree-covered valley. The views don’t last long though, nor does the steep gradient – a gentle rise here takes you up to a pronounced drop. After this, the scenery becomes more barren and open. The finish line is nestled in the solitude of rough grassland at a fork in the road.
