“Why are you always running late to the airport? Do you like living like this?”
“Shut up. You don’t know my life,” Randi laughed.
“Yes I do. You like living on the edge. Isn’t your life exciting enough without always being late?” Emery asked.
“Not at the moment. And for your information I’m not always late. That’s just today. Plus, I’m late because you decided to pack three suitcases for a four day trip. Where the hell are you going afterwards?”
“Tending,” Emery winked.
“It’s too early in the morning to be winking at somebody. Your tending to your business shit almost made us miss our flight. Wait until I tell Isla.”
“She can’t do anything to me. I’m grown.”
“You act like she’s not your sister though.”
“She’s not today,” she laughed.
“Emery you’re full of shit.
“Back to you though. I don’t understand you. Why didn’t you get off work earlier and leave yesterday?”
“Because I actually like my job.”
“I don’t believe that shit for nothing.”
“I do.”
“Whatever. Which one of her friends don’t you like?”
Randi rolled her eyes.
“Exactly. That’s what I thought. Which one is it? Because, I like all of her friends. Even you,” she laughed.
“I don’t give two rats’ asses if you like me or not. You’re still stuck with me. Me and Isla have been friends since we were little. Don’t even try to come for me.”
“Group One can start boarding now,” she flight attendant called out over the speaker phone.
“Saved by the attendant,” Randi laughed.
“This conversation isn’t over. We still have a layover in Florida. Don’t play with me.”
“Whatever. I’m not even addressing this anymore. Keep your mouth shut when we get to Mexico too. I’m trying to be drunk and riding one of those natives while I’m there.”
“You’re so damn nasty.”
“You could only dream.”
“I get mine,” Emery laughed.
“How long is this flight again?”
“Two hours. I think. The pilot might cut it short, you know they be speeding in the air.”
“You got that right.”
Emery sat down and looked over at Randi who had her shades on. “What are you doing?”
“About to catch this nap.”
“Are you serious?”
“Do you know what time it is?”
“Yes. It’s what 7?”
“Exactly. I don’t wake up until 8:30 on a good day. I need my rest. I can’t be looking like a racoon when I get there.”
“Too late for that.”
“Shut up,” she answered lifting up her shades. “You just worry about that extra friend on your face.”
“Yeah, my friend decided she wanted to join me this weekend.”
“Too bad for you.”
“No it’s not. I’m good. I live to survive another pregnant free month,” she laughed.
“As long as you don’t have an attitude. We’re good.”
“You won’t see me long enough to even worry about my attitude if I have one,” Emery laughed.
“You got that right,” she answered sticking her tongue out.
The ladies made it safely to their layover where they were greeted by a storm.
“Look at this shit,” Randi stated staring out the window.
“This better not delay us.”
“You’ve been traveling enough to know that this storm is going to set us back.”
“Shit,” Emery whispered dragging her bag.
“Hold up, E. Why are you dragging your bag like that?”
“I’m mad as hell. Something told me to leave yesterday. Naw you need a travel buddy. Why didn’t you check the weather?”
“Look now don’t get an attitude with me. I can’t help it’s raining.”
“You knew this shit was going to happen.”
“How?” she asked stepping back. “I’m going to act like you didn’t say that. I can’t help that it’s raining.”
“Yes you can. You should have checked the weather.”
“Girl fuck you and this weather.”
I know I’m wrong but I’m not apologizing, she thought to herself finding somewhere to sit down.
“I’m going to give you this one but that’s it. Don’t let that shit happen again. I don’t care if you are Isla’s sister. I don’t have to deal with your bullshit ass attitude. So that we’re clear.”
Emery rolled her eyes.
“I’m not the one. I don’t understand your issue but you better get it together.”
“I’m not your child.”
“And I don’t want you to be,” Randi snapped back.
“You two sound so childish. What’s wrong?” an older black lady asked.
Emery looked over at Randi who was sitting two seats down and started laughing.
“See what happens when an outsider gets involved. You two are ready to fuss me right on out for being in your business but you’re telling everybody in the airport about it,” the lady got up from her seat and walked away.
“I guess she told us.”
“No, she told you. You’re the one with the attitude,” Randi answered.
“Girl whatever,” Emery rolled her eyes.
––––––––
“HELLO!”
“Where are you two?”
Randi rolled her eyes again thinking about the experience her and Emery were having.
“We’re stuck at the airport in Florida right now.”
“Stuck!” she yelled.
“Yes stuck. And why are you so damn loud this early in the morning.”
“Because your ass was supposed to have been here.”
“I can’t help that the weather is bad.”
“See if you—-
“Listen don’t start. I’ve already been dealing with your moody ass sister, now you.” Randi cut her off.
“Well excuse me. I thought you two could travel together without killing the other one.”
“I’m straight it’s your sister with the attitude.”
Emery gave her the finger.
“See she’s sticking her finger up at me now. If one of us doesn’t make it, don’t even worry about it.”
“I’m going to make it. She might not though,” Emery stated.
“Do you hear her? She’s been out of line all morning.”
“Why are you lying?” Emery asked giving her the side eye.
“Don’t pay her any mind. You know she’s spoiled.”
“What did she say about me?” Emery asked getting up to move closer to her.
“Girl back up. She hasn’t said anything else about you,” Randi laughed pushing her away.
“Isla, I will jack you up when I get there. Stop talking about me.”
“Tell that big forehead girl I’m not talking about her.”
Randi started laughing.
“What’s so damn funny?” Emery asked.
“Put her on the phone,” Isla demanded like a parent.
Randi handed over the phone. Emery snatched it.
“Alright now. You’re doing too much in public. Don’t make me smack your ass,” Randi whispered.
“What do you want? I don’t appreciate you talking about me either,” Emery stated.
“You sound really stupid right now. How about you behave yourself before I call mom on you.”
“How about it? Call her. I don’t care. I’m not twelve anymore, Isla.”
Isla started laughing. “But you still pout like one.”
“You better have my bottle ready whenever I get there.”
“Chile, this isn’t about you. This is my weekend. I don’t know who told you different.”
“Isla, every day is about you. I’m coming to shut all of that down.”
“I bet you won’t. My girls aren’t going for that mess that you’re trying to pull. Make sure not to cause anymore ruckus why you’re traveling. I don’t want to see you on the news because of your temper.”
“I don’t have a temper, thank you very much. I don’t know where you got that mess from but y’all better be ready for me.”
“Give me the phone back. You aren’t talking about nothing.”
“I’ll see you when I get there. Randi wants her phone back.”
“I’m not playing with you E. Relax, you’re on vacation.”
“Hell I haven’t got to my destination yet. But once I get there you better understand that I’m going to have a great time.”
“It’s not your weekend.”
“But it is though,” Emery laughed.
Emery handed the phone over to an irritated Randi.
“Don’t nobody care about your raggedy ass attitude. I’m trying to get to the turn up just like you. So kill that attitude.”
Randi yanked the phone and Emery rolled her eyes extra hard.
“Listen, don’t pay my sister crazy ass any mind. She’s stressed and ready to cut up. I understand it. I am too. But please don’t kill each other before you get here.”
“Umm huh. I’ll try my best,” she answered cutting her eye at Emery.
“I’m serious. It’s going to be a great time,” Isla smiled.
“I damn sure hope so. I’m ready for a beverage.”
“We have plenty.”
“Good because I need a few,” she laughed.
“We’ll see you once you get here. Please be safe.”
“We will be,” Randi answered sticking her tongue out at Emery. “Have fun until we get there.”
“Girl you don’t even have to tell me that. This might be my last girl’s weekend not married too. I’m going in.”
“Oh lawd. Now I’m really ready to get there.”
“It’s going to be more than a movie. I’m thinking something bigger,” Isla laughed.
“Get off my phone. Your ass is going to be out by the second shot. I know how your drinking abilities are,” Randi laughed.
“Girl bye. I’m going to show you.”
“We’ll see in a few.”
“Later crazy.”
“Look,” Emery stated pointing in the direction of the board. “Our flight gate has changed and it looks like it’s leaving in an hour. Girl get off the phone with her. We’re on our way,” Emery smiled.
“Hey. We might be getting there sooner than we thought.”
“Okay,” Isla hung up the phone and walked into the kitchen.
