As usual, this latest Karina Cardinal mystery couldn’t have happened without the help of many people and hours of online research. When I heard about the museum fire in the news, I was working on Diamonds & Deception. As a research junky, I paused my writing to find out everything I could on the tragedy. After spending time on the museum’s website, I realized I wanted to incorporate it into the next Karina Cardinal storyline. I’d like to thank Google Arts & Culture and the Brazilian National Museum for working so diligently to digitize these artifacts so I, and others, can still view the valuable relics online. Thanks to Elizabeth Atalay, with National Geographic Magazine, for taking the time to send me her research, and for connecting me with Dr. Tasha Dobbin-Bennett, at Oxford College of Emory. Martin’s knowledge about the false artifact came from Dr. Dobbin-Bennett’s vast knowledge of forgeries and fakes. I could spend hours listening to her tell me stories, which are probably far more outlandish than Karina’s own adventure. Thanks to Matt Fine for his usual tidbits and insights on FBI life, which I use to develop Mike’s storyline.
Finally, I’d like to thank my awesome team, Emily, Rebekah, and Carolan, who help me make Karina’s stories better. Also, to my friends and family who read Karina Cardinal and continue to support my writing.
