A vertical model needs vertical symbols, although both may be plummeting now: the symbols and the model. These are the symptoms of our time; Cuba debates between a State that depends on firmly locked doors and a people as captive as they are captivating, who no longer want to bear life without breathing free. We Cubans demand an avalanche of horizontality. Enough with this Water Curtain. The weight of the laws and the personalities in power has been overwhelming. We need bridges of flight, emergency windows to leap into the void. More transparency, less hypocritical discipline. We can escape the closed circle through tangential lines.
Open the spectrum, make porous the final barriers that artificially isolate us from ourselves. Mock the dichotomous logic of here and there, inside and outside. The governability of the Revolution has always depended on such a chopped-up country; our lack of solidarity has been insulting, and now that no one believes in symbols or models anymore, it is unsustainable.
Now is no time for trusting. Maybe it’s time to have a little faith in despair. Cuban skepticism could be very fertile, very effective when the time comes to move the most immovable bricks of the wall. Nothing is more creative today than our disbelief. No one will convince us afterwards that it was not worth trying, trying to push the wall until it falls.
