Dear Ms. Brennan,
Today I had an interesting conversation with my Aunt Madalyne who lives in Costa Rica. It went something like this.
Her: Is everybody in California frightened?
Me: About what?
Her: The SARS disease.
Me: WHO says it’s contained.
Her: No one. Half the people in China have it. It’s not contained.
Me: WHO says it is!
Her: Nobody. Everybody’s worried. Even here in Costa Rica. It’s not contained.
Me: That’s what I’m trying to tell you. WHO is The World Health Organization. They say it’s contained.
Her: They are who?
Me: Right.
Her: What?
Me: The World Health Organization is WHO.
Her: Why are you asking me, you brought them up.
Me: They are the experts on communicable diseases. They follow outbreaks and transmissions all over the world. Nobody knows about these things better than them.
Her: Better than who?
Me: Right. Now you got it.
Her: I don’t even know what I’m talking about.
Me: You know there’s people that keep track of diseases.
Her: That’s right.
Me: Those people. The ones that keep track of the diseases. The ones that give reports to the press. They’re the ones that say it's contained.
Her: I don’t know
Me: Third base.
I know your business is a serious one, but I thought you might get a kick out of this. You must come across some confusion in your press releases when you start them out with, “WHO says.....”
Best regards,
Gabe Kaplan
