1. Lamachus was a respected Athenian general; the colleague of Nicias on the Sicilian expedition, he was killed in a skirmish before Syracuse in 414.
2. Aexone was Laches’ township (see p. 85 n. 1); its inhabitants had a proverbial reputation for abusive wit.
3. Prodicus was a sophist (see p. 94 n. 1) and contemporary of Socrates from Ceos. His work concentrated on linguistic usage and undoubtedly included semantic distinctions between ethical terms; he also wrote on the origin of religion and on natural science. On Damon seep. 86 n. 1.
