CHAPTER 10

The falcon dismounted and walked over to Kai. He was holding Naaji’s journal in his left hand.

“I have to give you credit. You’d make a fine soldier. You have integrity.”

God, please protect me!

Kai versus the falcon. There was no way out, except through the bully.

“If God is for me…” Kai lifted the dagger.

Horus inched closer, keeping his eye on the blade.

“You should have accepted the offer to help us.” He held up the journal. “I don’t know what this is about, but after I finish you, it won’t matter.”

The falcon inched closer. Closer to its prey.

Kai backed away from the official.

“You are about to feel the consequence of your bad decision.”

Horus jumped at her, moving fast like a bolt of lightning.

Kai tried using the dagger to defend herself, but the grown man was too fast and too strong.

The falcon pinned her to the ground. There was no way out.

The dagger had slipped out of Kai’s hand and landed on the ground, just beyond her reach.

Kai had failed. She was finished.

She thought of Lily. This whole experience couldn’t end like this.

Just then Kai had a random memory. Language Arts. Mr. Kay read the book Poppy to the class. Kai loved it because the little deer mouse, Poppy, figured out a way to outwit and stand up to the evil great horned owl, Mr. Ocax. In the end, justice was served. Just the same way she saw Moses deal with the pharaoh. He wasn’t afraid to stick up for God. Moses believed that he was sticking up for God’s people by standing up to the Egyptian leader.

If Moses could stand up to Pharaoh, I can stand up to this guy.

As the falcon leaned closer, Kai spit in his face.

He shut his eyes, and Kai rolled over and grabbed the dagger. She jumped to her feet and in the same motion spun around and kicked the soldier in the knee like she was a professional soccer player blasting a ball for the game-winning goal.

The soldier hunched over and dropped the journal.

Kai didn’t waste any time.

She grabbed the book and ran to the horse.

Horus stood up and somehow managed to run after her.

“You can’t beat me, Kai from Florida! I’m too strong for you.”

Kai tried to jump up on the horse, but it was too tall.

Horus was almost on her again.

Kai managed to get one foot in the left stirrup and pull herself up to stand.

Horus moved to pull her off the horse, but Kai used her other hand to swing the dagger at him. She grabbed hold of the saddle and pulled herself up to a sitting position.

Kai used her legs to kick the horse into a gallop.

Come on!

But the horse didn’t move.

Horus stood there considering her. “It’s over, Kai. Just get down and I’ll—” He lunged and grabbed on to her left leg. She plunged the dagger into the falcon’s hand.

He didn’t scream. Horus simply removed the dagger just as simply as if he had removed a watch from his wrist.

The horse began to run, knocking Kai off balance, but she managed to hold on.

She had escaped the evil one.

Thank You, God.
