This book drew on the shared knowledge and recollections of hundreds of people. I would like to thank them all and to acknowledge a few whom I interviewed repeatedly and who were willing to look deeply and sometimes painfully into their lives. Through them, I came to understand the remarkable history of the Mondavi family. I am grateful to Margrit Biever Mondavi, Michael Mondavi, Timothy Mondavi, Peter Ventura, Peter Mondavi Senior, Peter Mondavi Junior, Marc Mondavi, Warren Winiarski, Cliff Adams, John Martel, Frank Farella, Ted Hall, Sir Anthony Greener, Philip Greer, Jean-Michel Valette, Greg Evans, Brad Warner, Clay Gregory, and Harvey Posert. I was privileged to use the St. Helena Public Library as my home away from home and would like to thank the professionals there, as well as Nancy Light and the staff of the Wine Institute in San Francisco and the Bancroft Library at the Univeristy of California at Berkeley. Victor Geraci, the food and wine historian at the Bancroft’s Oral History Office, was particularly helpful, as was the research staff of the Napa Superior Court. I am also indebted to Linda Reiff and the Napa Valley Vintners, David Pearson and Roger Asleson at Opus One, and Peter Marks and Lauren Ackerman at Copia, James Laube of Wine Spectator, Susan and Dwight Pate of Pate International for sharing their treasure trove of images with me, and Paul Wagner, who helped smooth the way for my reproting in Italy. I worked with three researchers during the course of this book: Amy Lyman, Aleta George, and, for the longest period, Catherine Thorpe. I wish to especially thank Catherine, the daughter of a grape grower and a novelist in her own right, who brought her great intelligence and perseverance to this project.
