10. Curtain Rod

A hockey-themed room is the dream of many young lads. A hockey stick curtain rod will add a dramatic flourish while solving the sticky problem of fenestration decoration, and the garnish of a hockey stick profile above the window frame is very distinctive. Future archaeologists will marvel at your ingenuity, but the neighbours might call the zoning people or the fashion police should you fail to do this with panache. Unless you’re a good hand with a sewing machine, you will need to recruit other domestic forces to sew extra big loops on the curtains to fit over the hockey stick rod.

To get the rods to fit the window will take some measuring and cutting. If you need more length on the broken sticks, you might splice the sticks from behind with a metal plate. It is often helpful to use a piece of dowel to join two pieces of wood end-to-end, although, simple as it seems, lining up the drilled holes and the dowel can be humbling. You need to be dead-on in you measurement and drilling to avoid those “I told you you’re no carpenter” looks. The more streamlined technique may be to cut the pieces on a bias and take the glue/clamp route.

Installing this curtain rod can create a slight difficulty because they are top-heavy. This small problem with gravity and balance can be solved by using L hooks. Screw them into the window frame and drill holes in the rod base to accept the uprights. The rod will not tip or rotate if this is done properly.
