This project is a real no-brainer. You’ll need five broken hockey sticks at least 40" long, some scrap pieces for stakes, and three yards of fabric. Choose a distinctive design that symbolizes your nature, your taste, and your love of hockey. Not only will this device protect you from blowing sand, but by displaying the fact that you own five busted hockey sticks, it will keep away the beach bullies, too.
Trim one end of each stick to a point for easy insertion in the ground at set-up time. Lay out the fabric and evenly space the sticks about every 24", allowing about 6" of extra fabric on each end for wrapping around the end sticks. Arrange the fabric so that there is room at the top of each stick to attach a length of cord. Staple the fabric to the sticks from what will be the windward side, using 3/8" staples about every 6" down the sticks. Attach about 6' of cord to the top of each stick, making a groove around the stick to prevent the string from slipping. To the other ends of the strings, attach ground stakes made out of scrap stick pieces whittled to a point (long stakes for soft sand, shorter ones for hard turf). This will provide the stability you need on blustery days. Set-up is simple: unfurl your masterpiece, drive the sticks into the ground, and tie them down with the ground stakes. Fun in the sun ensues.
