23. Pot Rack

Some readers might assume that I am about to provide instructions for a handy holder for paraphernalia used in the burning of hemp. No way. I am taking the high road on this … uh, not that high road, the other one. These instructions are for building display space for your cooking pot collection.

A traditional pot rack, made of iron bent into graceful curves, announces that fine cooking is practised on the premises. A hockey stick pot rack screams, “Tuna melts!”

As a collection of cooking pots can be very heavy, this rack must be built strongly, so use glue and screws at all of your joints. Make your pot rack out of 36" long stick pieces so that you can easily mount it to the wall studs, which are spaced 18" apart. Cut six stick pieces and screw them together to make two triangular brackets. Securely screw the 36" stick lengths to the inside of the top piece of each bracket. If you place your slats fairly close together, you create a space across the top for the pot lids, too. Now you’re ready to mount the rack by screwing the brackets into the wall studs. You may need a stud finder for this, or you could rap your knuckles along the wall until the sound changes pitch, indicating you’ve found the stud. Measure over 18" and you’ve found the next one. Use S-hooks from the hardware store to hang the pots from the rack.
