• CHAPTER TWELVE •

PREDICTIVE TIPS

This chapter includes a variety of tips to help you in forecasting. Some of them are common knowledge among astrologers, and others come from experience. As with all else in predictive astrology, try them for yourself to see what works best for you.

Each of the influences listed increases the potential for the event, but is not a guarantee. Remember, there must be at least three indicators for an event to occur. Minor, everyday events are usually associated with inner planet transits and the New or Full Moon, while major events require progressions, solar arcs, and/or outer planet transits, and often involve an eclipse. Return charts offer confirmation of other major transits.

marriage/commitment

• The natal, progressed, and/or solar arc Ascendant will always be active

• Progressed Venus changing direction often indicates this event

• Progressed or solar arc conjunctions between the Sun and Venus are often active

• An aspect involving natal, progressed, or solar arc Mars is sometimes present

• Any outer planet crossing the Descendant increases the potential for a committed relationship

• A progressed or solar arc aspect involving the natal, progressed, or solar arc ruler of the seventh house is often active

divorce

• Progressed and/or solar arc aspects involving Venus and Uranus are common

• Transiting Uranus in hard aspect to the Ascendant or Descendant can trigger the end of a relationship

• Transiting Pluto is sometimes active in a divorce if it contacts the Descendant, Venus, or Descendant ruler

accidents

A hard Mars-Uranus aspect elevates accident potential. If the aspect involves transiting Uranus or a progressed or solar arc planet, the potential is in effect for a much longer period of time, although it must be activated by an inner transiting planet. However, if transiting Mars is direct and aspecting natal, progressed, or solar arc Uranus, the potential is limited to a few days, provided there are no trends that indicate a longer time frame.

Caution is advisable when transiting Mars is within orb of a conjunction to the natal Ascendant. This transit can trigger cuts, falls, and other accidents.

money

Money matters are ruled by the second and eighth houses. The second governs personal income and debt; the eighth governs your partner’s income and debt, debtors in general (bank, credit card company, etc.), inheritance, and insurance (proceeds and premiums). Look for progressed and solar arc aspects involving the second and/or eighth houses, planets in these houses, and the house rulers. The distinction between the two polar opposite houses blurs at times, so you should not limit your study of the chart to just one house or the other. Consider them both because they often work as a unit.

For gambling, including the lottery, there must be aspects that connect the eighth house (the casino’s money) and the fifth house (speculation). Any combination of the following (using transits, progressions, and solar arcs) can trigger a win:

• Aspects to natal planets in the fifth and/or eighth houses

• Aspects to natal rulers of the fifth and/or eighth houses

• Transits of the rulers of the fifth and/or eighth houses to other planets in your chart

Don’t automatically discount planets such as Mars and Saturn, which are traditionally considered difficult. If these planets fit according to the above guidelines, they can produce a win. A word about Jupiter: this planet, which rightfully deserves its billing as the luckiest of all, does not always have a role in gambling wins, so don’t fall into the trap of looking only for Jupiter aspects.

Another gambling technique you might find effective is the transiting Ascendant and Midheaven. This is simply the position of the two angles where they would be if you calculated for a given moment on a given date. They move forward through the zodiac at about one degree for every four minutes. This technique is best used if you have astrological software because you can then generate a hit list of the exact times that the transiting angles aspect your planets. If you do this, set the software selection to generate aspects to the planets according to the guidelines above. This does work, but is best used on days when there are other planetary aspects that activate your gambling planets.

If you’re looking for a time frame when you might receive a raise, begin with the New and Full Moons, either of which should aspect your second and/or eighth house according to the guidelines. This is of course easier to identify if your company has an annual review procedure. Once you fully understand how your chart responds to transits, which comes with practice, you can probably determine whether you’ll receive a raise that will please or disappoint you, depending upon the aspects.

If you work for a company where you must ask for a raise, also begin with the New and Full Moons. Then find the date that has the most favorable transits involving the second and eighth houses. Of course, if you can manage to acquire your boss’s birth data, you can also look at his or her chart!

When applying for a car loan, mortgage, or home equity loan, focus on the eighth house but also consider the second. Favorable aspects involving the eighth house improve the odds that you will receive the loan. But it’s very important to also consider the overall trends in your chart that are active at that time. Also look forward. If you see potentially restrictive financial conditions in the near future, such as Saturn transiting the second or eighth house, it might be wise to re-think the idea or to opt for borrowing less. Caution also applies if Jupiter is transiting your eighth house. This is one of the best, if not the best, influences for attracting money. Just remember that it only lasts a year, and what is affordable now may not be in the long term.

Difficult aspects from transiting Pluto can indicate bankruptcy, an unfortunate and unavoidable reality for some people. These aspects usually involve planets in or ruling the eighth house, but this can also occur with aspects involving the second house. Stress and strain in the financial houses is obviously usually evident prior to the Pluto transit.

career/job

When studying a chart for career/job influences, always look at transiting Saturn, the natural ruler of the tenth house. Transiting Saturn’s house position in your chart is often a strong indicator of where you are in the career cycle. It’s wise to maintain the status quo while Saturn transits your first house (and goes through the first three houses); this is not the time for new endeavors. The next milestone is Saturn conjunct the IC, where it is opposition the Midheaven. This can be a good time to pursue a new opportunity, but its potential is unlikely to develop as quickly as you wish and should therefore be considered a stepping stone.

Saturn transiting the sixth house can make you feel like a slave: lots of work and little or no recognition. When Saturn crosses the Descendant, you suddenly (almost magically) garner more attention and recognition. From this position, Saturn’s potentially positive career influence begins to gain momentum, culminating with its transit of the tenth house. You reap Saturn’s benefits as it transits the eleventh and twelfth houses.

Ideally, you should plan ahead so that you can reach a career pinnacle when transiting Saturn crosses the Midheaven and moves through the tenth house for about the next two and a half years. You can gain from Saturn’s transit of this house without doing that, but the greatest rewards come if you begin the climb as Saturn crosses the IC.

Of course there is no guarantee that Saturn transiting the tenth house will elevate your status. The level of achievement (or non-achievement) depends much upon whether and how much effort you’ve expended on the way up to this point. As is always true with Saturn, you get what you deserve. (A transiting Saturn-Sun conjunction is especially noted for this.) The often cited classic example of Saturn in the tenth house is the late former president Richard Nixon, who resigned from office under this transit.

The best times to apply for a job are between the New Moon and Full Moon, when the New Moon is in the second, sixth, or tenth house (Trinity of Wealth houses, see glossary). This is not always practical, however, because these New Moons occur four months apart. You can get much the same effect from a New Moon in another house in favorable aspect to natal, progressed, or solar arc planets in these houses or in aspect to the rulers of these houses.

The reason for using the period between the New and Full Moon is because the Moon is growing in light, which equates to new beginnings. After the Full Moon, the Moon decreases in light; this is a period of completion. If you don’t have the luxury of time, however, take advantage of any Full Moon that favorably aspects your chart. There is some logic to this: after all, the goal is to complete a period of unemployment. Although the energy isn’t as strong as that of a New or Full Moon, you could also apply for jobs on dates when the inner transiting planets form positive aspects to your natal, progressed, and/or solar arc planets.

To further put the odds in your favor after you’ve applied for jobs, look through the ephemeris for dates when the inner transiting planets activate your chart. These dates have potential for interviews. Then identify a few hours during the day when the transiting chart looks the most favorable so you can select the best interview time if you’re given that option.

Unfortunately, all of these efforts will not be as helpful if the chart trends show a longer term period of unemployment. Even this can be positive, however, because you’ll realize the importance of taking a lesser position, if possible, while continuing to search for a job in your field.

In general, transiting outer planets in hard aspect to the Midheaven indicate a potential period for career changes and developments. Whether these will be positive or negative depends upon other transits and the progressions and solar arcs. A Uranus square to the Midheaven, for example, can bring an unwelcome change or an unexpected opportunity for gain.

health

This is an area best avoided by most astrologers. Only those who have medical training should consider forecasting in this area. If you see difficult slow-moving aspects (outer planet transits, progressions, and solar arcs) involving the twelfth house (and sometimes the sixth) along with relevant eclipses, the best information you can give is to suggest a consultation with a medical professional. Do not speculate! Without specialized training in the medical field and medical astrology, it is unethical and illegal to offer any insights.

You can, however, use your chart to be proactive regarding common viruses. The potential is often signaled by a difficult New or Full Moon and inner planet transits involving the sixth house, and sometimes the twelfth. If you see one of these periods coming (study your chart for the last time you had a cold), take extra precautions and you just might avoid it.

There is another medical-related activity that can benefit from astrology: starting a reducing diet. This is often more successful if you begin at the Full Moon, based on the theory that as the Moon decreases in light, so does your weight.

property and relocation

Relocation is most often indicated by outer transiting planets, progressions, and/or solar arcs crossing, squaring, or in opposition to the IC. There can be multiple moves within a short period of time when an outer planet retrogrades back and forth, making three contacts to the IC.

If you want to purchase a house, look forward a few years. Check the outer planet transits, progressions, solar arcs, and eclipses that will be effect, looking for any downward financial trend that could indicate difficulty in the market as a whole or in paying your mortgage.

Be alert for the possibility of flooding if you see transiting Neptune approaching your IC (or contacting a planet in or ruling the fourth house). This would be a time to consider flood insurance even if you don’t live in an area prone to flooding, hurricanes, or severe weather.

Pluto crossing the IC or in hard aspect to a planet associated with the fourth house sometimes indicates termites. This transit also makes it advisable to be sure your property and possessions are well covered by insurance.

derivative houses

The concept of derivative houses makes it possible to use your chart to forecast events for people close to you, such as mate, children, parents, friends, and siblings. Although this is not a replacement for reading the specific individual’s chart, you can often glean information by using this technique.

In order to read derivative houses in your chart, you first need to identify the house that rules the person you’re inquiring about. For example, you would select the seventh house for a mate, and the fifth for a child. Parents as a couple are represented by the fourth house. Some astrologers use the fourth house for the mother, and the tenth house for the father. Others (myself included) use the tenth house for the mother, and the fourth for the father.

Once you know the house that represents the person, turn the chart so that the appropriate house is on the Ascendant. The seventh house (mate) in your chart would then be the first house of your mate, using derivative houses. If you want information about your mate’s career, count forward ten houses (for the tenth house of career), beginning with the first house (the seventh in your chart). Your mate’s derivative tenth house would thus be your fourth house.
