A Note on English Titles

As the acknowledged son and heir of the Earl of Hendon, Sebastian St. Cyr carries the courtesy title of Viscount Devlin. Although it seems counterintuitive to most Americans, his wife would typically be known as “Hero Devlin” rather than “Hero St. Cyr” (compare with the famous Almack’s patroness Sally Jersey, wife of George Villiers, Fifth Earl of Jersey). As a third son who came into his title only after the death of his brothers, Sebastian tends to think of himself as “Sebastian,” although his friends, father, and even Hero most often call him “Devlin.”
