ABOUT NAMGYAL MONASTERY

Namgyal Monastery was originally founded in Tibet by the Third Dalai Lama. From the time of its creation it has served as the private monastery of each of the successive Dalai Lamas. Due to the prestige of the monastery, the fact that it was located in the Potala and was the private monastery of the Dalai Lama, the Chinese have not allowed it to function.

At present, the monastery is reestablished in India and has many young monks undergoing the thirteen-year training curriculum devised by H.H. the present Dalai Lama and the former Abbot, Ven. Lobsang Nyima. Namgyal has also established a North American Seat of the monastery in Ithaca, New York, in conjunction with a new teaching institute. Namgyal Monastery Institute of Buddhist Studies in Ithaca follows the same curriculum as that in India except the curriculum is presented as a condensed five-year program. The institute combines its Tibetan monastic faculty with Western resident scholars and a large adjunct faculty of preeminent scholars of Tibetan Buddhism. It is open to qualified men and women students on either a full or part-time basis. Namgyal has been given a beautiful piece of land just outside Ithaca and is currently hoping to build a retreat center and guest house in order to be able to handle greater numbers of visitors and students interested in Buddhism and sacred arts.
