In the midst of a societal collapse caused by an oil embargo and terrorist attacks on American infrastructure, Helen and Lewis Vaughn finally realized that they couldn’t survive where they were. They left their home in the Florida panhandle and began a hazardous trip to Oklahoma to join Helen’s family. Soon, Helen found herself alone in an unfamiliar world full of desperate people, dangers, and uncertainty. Her trip across Alabama, Mississippi, and Arkansas became a struggle to survive hazards she’d never imagined: violence, injury, and the terrifying prospect of crossing the Mississippi River. Helen fought to overcome every obstacle as she endeavored to make her way to loved ones she wasn’t even sure were still alive. Along the way, she encountered both new companions and evil beyond her comprehension. Her strength and determination tested at every turn, Helen used her skills, faith, and knowledge to make her way across the South. Seldom able to relax her guard, she learned to rely on a few new friends and her own sense of humor to keep moving forward, trusting her instincts and hoping to live long enough to be reunited with her family and friends.
