Michael Hoff was a financial planner and former Air Force pilot who lived in Phoenix, Arizona. He is in Houston, Texas his former home on a business trip. As he sits on the plane waiting to take off a bright flash hits the plane and all power dies. When other airplanes start to crash on the runway, Mike opens the emergency slide and leads an exodus from the airplane. As a former resident of Houston, Mike maintained a storage locker 10 miles from the airport where he had supplies. As a prepper his supplies included an EMP free vehicle, an older model Kawasaki motorcycle. With no modern cars running and planes crashing Mike intends to ride the motorcycle the 1500 miles back to his family in Arizona. Along the way Mike meets Dave Matthews, a crop-duster pilot who has been working in Texas. Dave lives in California and intends to fly his plane all the way home. The crop duster had no computer chips and ran as well as Mike’s motorcycle and older model cars. The two men team up to make their journey from Houston to their homes in Phoenix and Bakersfield. Even on the plane it is a harrowing journey and when the plane is shot down they continue on the motorcycle. Along the way they encounter the best and the worst of human society after an EMP hits the nation.
After the two men’s families settle in Mike’s cabin in the Arizona mountains, North Korea hits the country with nuclear strikes. Los Angeles and Washington D.C, are destroyed. After the U.S. responds to North Korea, China declares war on the U.S. as well. Although the United States was devastated by the EMP they had new technology developed that make them immune to further events whether man-made or natural. Mike and Dave are recruited into the Air Force as pilots. Mike as a fighter pilot to repel the expected Chinese invasion and Dave to shuttle technicians in to turn the power back on in Phoenix.
