John Carter is captured by the red men of Horz, one of the 'dead' cities of Mars. Sent to the dark, dusty, underground pits to await his death, he stumbles upon an ancient maritime civilization. These exquisitely dressed men and women do not know that their strange planet is dying. The diabolical madman who runs the pits has also captured Llana of Gathol, beautiful daughter of Tara of Helium, and together they battle for survival in a weird, subterranean world.
