First published in January 1916 and reprinted here from the 4th edition of May 1918. Edith Cavell was a British nurse and humanitarian, celebrated for saving the lives of casualties from both sides during World War I and in helping some 200 Allied soldiers escape from German-occupied Belgium. This led to her arrest after which she was found guilty of treason and sentenced to death by firing squad.
