He had distinguished himself at Oxford, and had selected his profession with the determination to do well in it, as he had done with all he had hitherto put his hand to."

Go with Elsworth to medical school, in a time just after the French Revolution. Medicine at that time is particularly revolting and cruel, especially in the "free hospital" run by the students and their teachers.
