JASON

Mark wasn't supposed to be involved in this. He was a kindly old wolf, and the best neighbor in the world. He only tried to check in on my lover when things were getting suspicious next door.

And that cost him his life.

I went to pay my respects at his memorial, not to get sucked further down this spiraling pit of hell that was the Grey Brotherhood. To my surprise, and caution, they offered a means of peace.

A truce.

But what they wanted in return for that was something I couldn't have ever imagined.

Was it worth it? To protect Forest, to protect my baby, I would do anything.

No matter the consequence.

I needed to find somewhere safe to call home. And Jason's house was no longer safe.

The Grey Brotherhood knew where we lived, and we needed to get out of there.

Willow barely managed to pull through the rough circumstances of his birth. I refuse to raise him in fear of those mutts trying to come after us again.

And I refuse to be the helpless pup my pack had to keep saving.

But Jason's eyes are so tired, and I feel horrible that he's pushing himself to the brink of exhaustion just so he can afford a new, safer place for us to live.

At least we would get our happily ever after.
