The victims had no known enemies. Police Chief Fred C. Fellows had no clues.

Roger Chapman, Assistant Superintendent of Schools in Stockford, was a quiet type, though well-liked. Betty, his wife, gay and fun-loving, was the most popular teacher at the high school. On a Monday evening, while having dinner at home, Betty took a small taste of creamed onions, Roger had a larger amount. A short time later she was violently ill, her husband was dead.

It was the milk in the cream sauce that had been poisoned, with enough strychnine to kill the entire town. But how? By whom? And, more important, why?

Chief Fellows, furious because he was completely stymied, did the only thing he could do. He followed a far-out hunch— so far out that his staff laughed openly at him—hoping desperately it would pay off.
