Thrown down a flight of stairs and then beaten, Jacob pulls out of the daze and discovers a telephone to call for help. But the attacker comes back for more, again... and again... and again. Can he escape? Can help arrive in time?

****************Review by Dan Fitzpatrick on March 04, 2010:

"Normally, I would give a good review for a book that entertains me. Even though it was a story of someone being beaten, I was enjoying it. I was actually finding it humorous ... at least the hotel clerk. I just had to chuckle at what I was reading because it seemed too fake and even a little absurd.

Without giving the story away, that feeling of glee from the absurdity of what was happening changed instantly. I suddenly felt guilty for finding joy in what I was reading. It was a great twist that I didn't see coming. Throughout the story, I was thinking 3 or 4 stars because I was enjoying it, but I'm going to give it 5 because I experienced a jaw drop, and that doesn't typically happen to me. I was had ... nice work.

Review by Nancy on Goodreads June 11, 2011:

"This unusual short story starts out with a man attending a convention at a hotel who is picked up and thrown down the stairs. As he lies on the basement floor with a bloody nose, broken wrist, and near unconsciousness, he is fortunate to find a phone and is able to reach the hotel operator to get assistance. While the operator attempts to call for help, the attacker returns several more times.

The interaction between the victim and the hotel clerk and the odd events made me chuckle. The story gradually became more bizarre and I didn’t see the twist coming.

I feel a little dirty for enjoying it."
