About An Ambitious Woman by Edgar Fawcett
A young woman vows to climb the New York social ladder in the late nineteenth century. This novel explores a woman's ambition at a time when marriage was the only way to advance one's position. The novel tells the story of Claire Twining, the daughter of an English gentleman who migrated to the United States and was ruined through a series of naive investments. After his death, Claire begins striving for a success of her own. She thinks that success will come to her through a prosperous marriage and being accepted into New York high society, and this is what she strives for, though her conscience sometimes tells her differently. Edgar Fawcett (May 26, 1847 – May 2, 1904) was an American novelist and poet. Fawcett was born in New York City on May 26, 1847 and spent much of his life there.
