It's not that farming is inherently a poor occupation, it's just that having to compete against large corporate owned farms makes it nearly impossible for the small farm owner to be financially, overly successful. To a young man who comes from a family that sits at the lower end of the middle class, the slot allotted to most small farm owner/operators, the concept of a college education and a better career becomes a driving factor. Especially when the man is exceptionally bright and has no instinct or desire to follow in the footsteps of his farmer father. So it is with Lance Wilson.
As with most young gay people, growing up gay put Lance Wilson's life in conflict most of the time. It wasn't until he moved away to go to college that he finally began to feel like he had taken at least some control over his future. With the help of a fellow student, Bert, Lance discovered the advantages, at least financially speaking, of street hustling.
While there were incidents that shook his belief in the lifestyle, he continued to hustle. His being outed in a very public and dramatic fashion caused a painful separation from his family. However, it was a gay bashing of someone he had been with and the murder of a close friend, who, like Lance, hustled for his money, that created huge conflicts in Lance's mind. Conflicts that might even force Lance to relinquish his dream of a college education. Without a good education and a good career, how could he possibly find a man who was willing to share his life? Will Lance find the man of his dreams or will he end up living a life of loneliness; without a mate, without his family?
This is the story of Lance Wilson, the good as well as the bad.
