Old Peter Lane is content to make a bare living cutting firewood and whittling kitchen tools and toys for the people in the nearby village. Then a dying woman stumbles to his shanty boat during a storm and Peter finds himself the unwitting caretaker for her lame three-year-old son. He must make a respectable home for the boy or see him taken away and put to work by self-appointed "social workers."
