A goods train from Plymouth arrives late at the station at Okehampton – three years late.

It had disappeared from a single line with no connecting branches. It was an impossible mystery at the time and even more so at the later date. Lestrad and the bewildered officials of the Great Western Railroad turn to Holmes and Watson for help.
