Robert Herrick 's (1868-1938) novels deal with the turbulence of industrialized society and the turmoil it can create in sensitive, isolated people. Together begins with a wedding in a small chapel. Herrick shows marriage as a struggle between men and women. Men trying to earn more money while their bored wives spent it, pulling the couple apart, which often lead to adultery. John and Isabella narrowly avoid this by moving to a ranch out West. Herrick examines the changing role of women at the beginning of the 20th century.
