“Oh, John, stop fucking me about in the car! It's indecent when people can see us! Don't you think so, Betty?”
Jane Perkins and Betty Dixon were sitting on either side of Betty's father in the back of his Daimler on their way to spend the weekend with him at a hotel on the river near Cookham. Three weeks had passed since Betty and her mother had entertained Ted Greeny and Leslie Spears, the two young members of her father's firm. Betty had hoped to give herself to her father, the following weekend, with her friend, Jane Perkins to comfort and help her but things had not worked out quite that way. Her father had had to go off on a business trip to Scandinavia and he had taken Jane with him so that she could act as his secretary by day and could put her lovely, young body at his disposal by night. Indeed both Betty's parents had made considerable progress with their respective, adulterous liaisons during the last few weeks. On their return from Scandinavia, her father had installed his girl-friend in a pleasant little flat in Chelsea and he used to spend two or three nights a week there. Her mother had had the office-boy, Ted, to stay at their country-cottage in Oxfordshire each weekend and, during the week, she used to visit Ted in his 'digs' in Streatham. Ted's landlady had, once or twice, caught them naked in bed together and she had had to be paid well to keep her mouth shut!
