Stelianos Bervanakis survived Nazi imprisonment and against all odds for over two years. For over two years he was starved and beaten and sometimes left for dead. This is his heroic story as told to Barrie Machin in 1968.

There were many war heroes in the Cretan resistance to the Nazi occupation of Crete. We owe our very existence and our democracy to these heroes. Stelios' story is a paradigm of the indomitable Greek spirit.
