Run Cally Run

The book is set in prohibition era Chicago. Cally is the daughter of the local mob's bookkeeper. He milks money from the mob slowly over some time to be able to move away with his daughter. He wants his estranged wife to go with them but he doubts that that will happen. The day he chooses to leave another bookkeeper arrives to go over the mob books. He finds the thefts and they chase Dermot the bookkeeper to ask him about it. He is hit by a bus and ends up in hospital. Meanwhile Cally is asleep in bed at home blissfully unaware of any of it. Her father has given her a key to look after and it is now on a string round her neck. When Luigi Clo the mob leader sends his men to search the house Cally hides on the roof. They trash the place completely and then leave carrying the unopened safe. Cally does not know what to do so she decides to go and tell her father what has happened. She starts walking toward the hotel where the mob have their headquarters-
