High above the remote windswept plains of Kazakhstan, a Russian Soyuz capsule drops toward Earth. Onboard are two Russian cosmonauts and an American astronaut returning from the International Space Station. A strange shimmer in the atmosphere, a blinding flash of light, and the capsule vanishes in a blink as though it never existed.
Stress levels spike at the Russian space agency, Roscosmos, as evidence points to a catastrophic reentry failure. NASA fears they have witnessed another Columbia shuttle disaster. But more than an hour later, a communications facility in Australia picks up a voice transmission that sounds like one of the astronauts. The voice of a dead man?
In Washington, the National Security Advisor quickly pulls together a team to investigate. As they gather evidence, what first appeared to be a reentry tragedy could be something else and a classified government project on the cutting edge of quantum physics may hold the clues. With the astronauts’ lives on the line, there is little time to waste.
Daniel Rice is a government investigator, working for the president’s science advisor. Marie Kendrick is a NASA operations analyst. With help from Fermilab physicist, Nala Pasquier, they must track down the cause of what could be the most bizarre event in the history of human spaceflight. They each draw from their scientific knowledge as they plunge into the strange world of quantum physics, with impacts not only to the three missing astronauts, but to the entire human race.
