A reeking bundle of rags washes up on the lakeshore of a small Canadian town. On wobbly legs it rises to a second life. Death by drowning has preserved a touch of brain function: it manages to slur a few syllables. The creature's first meal and the town's first homicide come courtesy of an elderly lady walking alone. Licking blood from scabby lips, the creature then heads home to reunite with its wife and kids.
Electromagnetic waves wake other dead who head for a trailer park for a midnight snack. Police chief Jane Dougherty and partner investigate the murders: a motorcycle gang vendetta? Underworld trade in body parts?
Energy trickling through the ground hits a cautious cabal of vampires who launder money by quietly operating a local bar. They desperately need the blood that zombies spill and are forced to create a blood bank in their wine cellar with imprisoned customers as unwilling donors. A second drowning victim with clearer, more evil, thoughts coordinates the rise of zombiedom. Citizens who get eaten are buried and 12 hours later rise as energized zombies with hollows where guts and brains once were. The horde grows exponentially, takes over a school and demands a super-size exchange of one kid for three adults.
Police, led by the Chief Dougherty, battle zombies who fight the army who combat vampires who conflict with posse.
