Dead Reckoning is the third story in the Heartland Zombie Apocalypse series and the first book of the Red Rises collection. Dead Reckoning breaks away from the characters introduced in the first two HZA books and explores new locations and new people. Taking place nearly a year into the collapse of society, but like all stories, it starts at the beginning.

The dead are rising bringing hell to the world. A powerful Atlanta gang leader, makes himself into the living embodiment of the demon Sammael, the king of the Satans. Ruling the infernal regions with his lover and guide, the beautiful and seductive Lilith. Their only rule to those living in their borders, pay tribute or die.

Travelling through the lands of the dead, desperate and dastardly a woman alone. Born into the affluence of Atlanta's high society, she loses everything. To fulfill a deathbed promise to the only person she knows she cannot live without, she becomes reborn as Red. Unable to withstand the loneliness, she falls in with a small group of families and joins them in a search for a safe haven.

Red and her new comrades find themselves hounded by the vicious gang of Inferno. Do they risk the lives of their children to stand and fight or run and hope to stay ahead of the threat. In the wake of this desperate choice Red comes face to face with her past.
