Autumn, 1943.
Mary Holland is a driver for the Air Transport Auxiliary but she yearns to fly Spitfires for the service. In Mary’s eyes, though, her humble background excludes her from the elite group of girls who fly the beautiful fighter planes between ferry pools at the height of WWII.
After all, glamorous socialite Angela Browne has been chosen as the next ‘Atta Girl’ to adorn recruitment posters. Bobbie Fraser learned to fly in her wealthy father’s private plane, while Jean Dobson is a grammar school girl dedicated to serving King and Country by bringing the Spits in to land whatever the conditions.
Mary can only dream – until she gets the push she needs to overcome her self-doubt and enrol in the ATA Conversion Course.
Thrown together with Angela, Bobbie and Jean at their Rixley base, the girls fall in and out of love and friendship, locked in highly dangerous situations that heighten emotions and push them into hasty decisions that they may later regret.
Above all, can the Spitfire Girls survive storms, emergency landings and enemy attack, and emerge triumphant?
A heart-warming, romantic story of friendship, camaraderie and triumph over adversity that fans of Donna Douglas, Nancy Revell and Call the Midwife will adore.
