The fifth book in the series begins during the exciting run up to Zak’s first magical Christmas and New Year. As the year turns however, the magical world descends into turmoil. A new wizard war has sprung up with frightening speed. Witches and wizards are going missing, mythical beasts are on the loose, and the ranks of the dark side are swelling.

An uneasy stillness has gripped the magical community as each family prepares for the conflict ahead and sorts out it’s allegiances.

The non-magical world is not immune from the turmoil. Without understanding what is happening or why, the list of missing persons is growing weekly. Starting in Ireland, but soon spreading over the Irish Sea, the same uneasiness that has gripped the magical world settles on towns and cities across the land.

Zak, Tallion, and the other Netherdale students are shielded for a while by the powerful protective magic of Sir Philip, but eventually even Netherdale will see its share of unexplained destruction. Centuries of experience and preparation have turned Lofthouse Castle into a veritable fortress, but will Antares Malchus test the defences?

Winters Chill starts to reveal the pathway our two heroes must walk, and gives us tantalising glimpses of the hurdles ahead of them and their final goal. With the return of some earlier characters, and walk on parts for some new ones, you might also spot a few cameo appearances in here too. It’s not quite a cliff-hanger ending this time either, although there are definitely some loose threads which will need tidying up in the next book.

So what happened to ‘The Tangled Web’? I know everyone was expecting that to be book number five, and so was I, but Winters Chill sneaked in front – sorry! The Tangled Web is coming next though – promise! :-)
