Jack Taggart finally returns to Olvion only to find that the woman he loves has been enslaved by pirates from across the sea. Determined to let nothing keep him from reuniting with his Dwan, Taggart allies himself with a rogue sea captain, an irrepressible young woman and a bold military commander. The near-mythical Mountain Child, Tinker, returns to join again with her human friend, this time following her new mate as he struggles to accomplish his own 'tasking'.

Taggart, also known as Tag-Gar, The Legend, finds himself back among the people of Olvion after being marooned on his home planet of Earth. He is discovered by an athletically gifted young woman who agrees to guide him back to the walled city-kingdom. Though the Great War with the sub-human Grey Ones has been won, groups of the fiends still roam the countryside attacking targets of opportunity. Taggart is shocked to find that his new guide has her own combat skills and the two battle their way across the war-torn land meeting with friends, both old and new, in the process.

Arriving in Olvion, they find that the Coastal Kingdom of Aspell has been attacked by raiders from across the Sea of Panoply and dozens of women, including Dwan, have been taken as slaves. Leading a large military rescue force, Taggart and his friends place their lives in the hands of a former pirate captain in order to reach an unknown land. They are forced to fight their way through an unfriendly sea, nearly unscaleable cliffs and deadly swamps to reach their objective. Outnumbered against an entire island of outlaws, the Olvionis put their lives on the line to take back their citizens and forever remove the threat from their homeland.
