“Hmm…” I sigh and shake my head. “I know I’m supposed to tell you about myself if I want you to read my story. Don’t worry, I will, but first, let me ask you this, are you ready to follow my journey? Do you have what it takes?
“Who am I, you ask?” I bring a hand to my mouth to muffle my laughter as I step out of my small tent. I head for the steep edge of the mountain atop which I have camped. Below my bare feet, the grass is still moist. I glance at the waterfall in the distance before shifting my gaze to the shy sun, slowly casting its light upon the world, and heave a heavy sigh. “To tell you the truth, I don’t know how to answer this question myself. I have been camping in this region, alone and away from the world for just this purpose: to find an answer, and I am no closer today than I was when I first came here. So, here are some facts:
“I’m the only human in the world with the guardian gene. At the age of six, an android approached me and claimed to be of a race that predates humans. He said I was the guardian of Earth, and my destiny was to protect my planet from alien invasions. I trained for twelve years, learned every aspect of a superpower within me I hadn’t known existed before then. I studied the stories of every guardian that came before me, and memorized the entire history of humans, including that which no one else knows. I became a super soldier, and now, the moment of truth is finally here.”
I take a deep breath. “An invasion is coming, and all I have is 114 hours before they reach Earth. I have the strength, wisdom, and courage. I am ready to fulfill my duty.” I close my eyes and slowly inhale the fresh air. “I will be honest with you, though. I am terrified. I have faith in myself, but I am just a man, facing an entire fleet of aliens with only a robot by my side. I feel the weight of this burden because I know that if I die, so will the entire planet.”
“But, you know what?” I pause and run my fingers through my hair. “This is not the time for self-doubt. Let us prepare and show those aliens that they chose the wrong planet to mess with.”
“So, come. Join me on my journey, but first, tell me the truth. Do you think I can save the planet? Or are we all about to meet our end?
