A war torn world. A seasoned mercenary and warrior pulls a young man from the carnage and rubble. A young man with no name, no past, and virtually no memories, living on his own in the filthy streets of this tiny village, and its only survivor.

The leader demands answers from the young boy at once, and meets a very untimely end. As his sword presses against the boy, it instead turns on him and kills him on the spot. Jengus, another mercenary, recognizes this boy's true nature. A shadow spirit stands before him. He asks the boy again for his name.

The boy reveals his ugly truth, he recalls no name, no past, no family. Jengus dubs him Koa Darke, in respect of his inherent talents and nature. Koa's only desire: to be human, not feared, not used by those looking for personal gain.

With steel in his spine and fire in his belly, Koa sets out to learn the art of the sword, and master his own unique abilities. Jengus and Koa travel across the country, and garner themselves quite the reputation for being an unstoppable force. Still, Koa struggles with feelings of sadness as the world sees him as a tool, a weapon, and otherworldly. His unyielding desire, to be human, haunts him internally.

With the help of lowly slave girl, Lia, and his mentor Jengus, will Koa ever find the peace he desires? Or will he destroy it all in one unbridled act of retribution. Who will prevail, the man or the Shadow?
