De geschiedenis van een neger, translated as The history of a negro, describes a journey of a liberated slave and his friend (former boss) mister N. The very intelligent negro Thomas is struggling with faith as ratio tells him that the faith of his native country can't be true. The one god of mister N. a protestant is more appealing but as he puts it: "I understand that there must be good and evil in the world, but I do not like the distribution of this good and evil. As all of my people see far more evil than others. It does not matter whether you are good or evil."

Through conversations with others he tries to overcome his difficulties with faith.
