Normally Rear Detachment duty consists of drinking to make the boredom go away, answering phones, and taking down messages. There usually isn't anything to break up the monotony aside from getting blackout drive drunk and punching out your room mate. For the members of 2/19th Special Weapons Group, charged with handling nuclear and chemical weaponry in West Germany, their stint on Rear Detachment promised to be nothing more than routine boredom and further slipping into alcoholism. Their barracks are on top of a mountain, overlooking the Fulda Gap, above a ski resort and only a hundred vertical feet below a glacier, with record snowfall already going on they're cut off from everyone else, so it isn't like anything exciting is going to happen, right?

Without warning the members of 2/19th find themselves in a barracks without heat, power, or outside communications. The blizzard outside prevents them from attempting to reach help, which is five miles away by road, on the other side of the mountain, and twelve hundred vertical feet below them. Even reaching the ski resort, only five hundred vertical feet below the massive barracks, is a pipe dream. The temperature inside the barracks is rapidly dropping without the massive furnaces to supply heat to the huge cinder-block building, and even the dedicated hardened land-lines are out.

It isn't long before Corporal Anthony Stillwater, along with his two best friends, Specialists Nancy Nagle and Johnathon Bomber, discover that Rear Detachment is not alone on the frozen mountain top. Before they even really understand they are in danger Rear Detachment has taken casualties and are put in a tenuous position. Soon the trio are pushed to the limit trying to just survive.
