When Lord Farnley’s daughter dies, Lucy Oldfield is ordered to burn the exquisite French doll her father gave her. But Lucy cannot destroy it and keeps the doll. Soon after, Heaton Hall is closed and she returns home to Leeds, but the death of her mother and a fleeting affair leave Lucy alone and with a son to support.

A chance encounter with a gentleman on a train, and the offer of a cottage in the country, brings a change in Lucy’s life and fortune, but the discovery of a girl on the moors has a lasting impact. A fire, the Great War, a legacy, a sea-journey to India and a robbery all play a part in this 25 year saga.
